F1 2013 Race Brazilian Grand Prix

F1 2013 Race, Brazilian Grand Prix.

Interlagos, 22-24 November
Live on BBC TV and BBC Radio 5 live plus live text commentary online.

Vettel, Webber, Alonso!

Remember to sign up for email, (look in the sidebar),

to receive next years race calendar and F1 news in email.

That's it for this year! This F1 Fan will keep posting here occasionally throughout the winter to keep you informed of the important news and please remember to follow Formula1Race on Twitter!

Its all change for next year, with drivers moving to different teams, some drivers moving away from F1 and new rules and regulations in the pipeline. Also the most important change will be the change from the 8 cylinder engines to the 6 cylinder turbo charged engines in 2014.

Driver of the race for this F1 fan is two-fold, Webber for his drive, (even after the team messed up both of his pit stops in this race), he still held onto 2nd position. Next is Max Chilton for his 19 rookie finishes as a newcomer to F1.

Although we had a dry race, it was still exciting and very interesting, if you did not see this race, make sure you do see it, it is a must for all F1 fans.

F1 Report from Pole Position at Formula1Race.co.uk:
The conditions were treacherous during qualifying, (with Eddie Jordan for the BBC, saying it was about the heaviest rainfall he'd seen for a long time here at Interlagos); Although, according to statistics, it has been the driest year in F1 for approximately 4 years. Lets hope we only see enough rain to make the race interesting and not dangerous.

F1 Comment from Pole Position at Formula1Race.co.uk:
Sebastian Vettel is the most likely to win this race, but this F1 fan would like to see Mark Webber win preferably, since it is his last F1 race. Mark Webber I think, is more resolute about retiring than Schuey was and we will not see his return; It is a real shame and we will miss him.

Unless Mark is under threat of losing his seat at Red Bull, (and I could see that happening in the near future if he weren't leaving), he is in the best car of his career to move forward next year if he had stayed in F1.

Schuey and Webber going out as top competing F1 drivers!
We might be seeing more records of ever-younger drivers, being the first to achieve certain results, but it would be great to see more Michael Schumacher-esk records, with drivers pushing through those age barriers.

Schumacher certainly could have gone on further, as he was still more-competitive than half the other drivers, (that were half his age); And was getting in the top-ten lap-times, in just about every race.
That, my F1 fan-colleagues, is being 'an F1 competing driver'.

Webber is even younger than Schuey was when he retired. I absolutely know and believe Mark Webber has much more to give us, but, his decision to leave F1 is for deeper personal reasons, obviously known only Mark himself.     There is no-doubt that Webber is still in the prime of his career and in the best team and car to win. (Even the pit crew do amazing pit times, with a 1.9 second wheel-change stop-record this season), WOW!

There were a couple dramas on the track during qualifying.
  • Adrian Sutil (Force India), dropped out of Q1 after a brake failure.
  • Jenson Button failed to match team mate Sergio Perez's speed and did not make it into the top ten.
  • JB also carries the three place penalty for passing under the red flag in P1.
  • Rosberg, Massa and Maldonado were other none top ten qualifying surprises!

Overtaking was thought to be a problem at this circuit. However, with the correct gearing (usually using a shorter gear range), a driver can overtake.

F1 2013 Race, Indian Grand Prix

F1 2013 Race, Indian Grand Prix.

New Delhi, 25-27 October.
Live on BBC TV and BBC Radio 5 live plus live text commentary online.

Vettel Wins! Sealing his 2013 World Championship!

Rosberg 2nd,Grosjean 3rd.

Driver('s) of the Race for this F1 fan is two-fold Vettel, for a great drive and a 4 time world champion, with 4 in a row championship title wins. Joining the likes of Fangio and Schumacher. At 26 years old its a great record to hold.  And, Grosjean for finishing 3rd, starting from 17th is very Schumacher-esk!

India is a great F1 circuit. This was a very enjoyable race. It is a shame (and it defies belief), that we are not coming back to India next year! Yes, India is NOT on the 2014 race calendar!

Its a brand new circuit for a few drivers, but some say, a corner, is a corner! How different can they be from track to track? Well, the difference is massive.

No-two corners in formula 1 are the same, but even if you could match the bank and turn of two corners, you would still have surface differences, including weather and atmospheric changes.

Other main corner factors are on the entrance and exits, depending upon what speed you enter the corner, whether from a long-straight or from the exit of another corer, parabolica or within part of a combination of sequential corners.

(A parabolica is a sweeping turn, that usually starts off tighter and opens out gradually, usually becoming a straight. It can also be opposite to that, starting out with a long sweeping turn that gradually gets tighter and tighter).

F1 2013 Race, Japanese Grand Prix.

Vettel wins! Webber 2nd Grosjean 3rd.

Suzuka, 11-13 October.
Live on BBC TV and BBC Radio 5 live plus live text commentary online.

Man of the race for this F1 fan is Sebastian Vettel for a quality drive, this race seals his position as F1 champion this year.

The whole race was scattered with overtaking incidents, bumps and knocks, but a good race. The best news is for Estaban Gutierrez who is the first Mexican F1 driver to score points, lets hope this will inspire more new drivers from countries were the F1 sport is not their primary export for sporting talent.

Gutierrez is learning and you can see him moving up through the sport. Its also about time we had some women drivers too!

Vettel. Alonso, Raikkonen.

Yes, Vettel in top form. And he is my choice of top driver for this F1 race. However, many other drivers had a real hard race, if you did not see this race, catch a rerun. You will enjoy it! Personally, I've been getting totally sick of all the politics in F1 presently; So much so, that I cannot even talk about it now. Maybe next race.

About the F1 2013 Singapore Qualifying Session.

Up to today's qualifying, Vettel is The King of F1 Singapore! Just to add insult to injury, he put in a fastest pole position time and got out of his car, took off his F1 business attire and sat back to watch anyone else try to beat his time. (Well, that's what it seemed to be like to me)!

I think it is a combination of competence, experience and of a man aware of his own limitations. He probably said to himself. "I know I couldn't have done a lap any faster than I did, so I'll hang up my race gloves till the race and not risk damaging the car or wearing out tires and burning fuel".

He will probably be my main F1 driver of the race on Sunday; Let's see!

Monza, 6-8 September.

Vettel, Alonso, Webber.

For me, Webber is the driver of the race and I cannot imagine why Webber is retiring. Di Resta is where he should be, (crashed out), and I ask why he is still in F1 after all the crashes that have been accredited to him. Like I was saying when he first started in F1 and commentators were claiming he was good enough to replace Schuey, I've always said not, no-way.

F1 2013 Race, Belgian Grand Prix.

Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton!

Spa-Francorchamps, 23-25 August.
Live on BBC TV and BBC Radio 5 live plus live text commentary online.

Driver of the race for this F1 fan: Has to be two-fold, However, before I say who: I'm not forgetting Vettel and Red-Bull. However, they are not even in a race. Vettel just needs to get some clean track in front of him and simply drive to the finish line. (That's how good he is and how good the Red-Bull car is).

So, in my opinion, the best driver today was Alonso simply because of his amazing start. Next Hamilton, (because as he said over the team radio); He drove the car to its limits! I could see that, with my experience as a long time fan of F1 and commentator for over the last 10 years.

Next, (since I always like to say, "I told you so"), perhaps you noticed as I mentioned some time ago, earlier this year, that Lewis Hamilton seems to do well when his dad is on the scene! His father is a settling and calming influence on Lewis and Lewis had his father at every race, where he had massive wins. He grew up with racing with his father by his side all the way!

Lewis said he was 'OK' with his position today in Belgium, but I believe he was actually very happy if not ecstatic with third. I bet he wished he could get 3rd in every race! See you next time.

F1 GP Belgian Race Result.

Sebastian Vettel Wins! Followed by Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton!

F1_RACE_Result_Belgian_GP_2013_for_Formula1Race.co.uk_courtesy_Formula1-com

All the cars start out on white-wall tires except for the Marussia's, (probably they are thinking that there is usually a crash at the first corner here, (as per the last four years F1 races); and are also thinking because the cars in front are on softs, that there will be more rubber on the track. The following cars will have better grip).  It will then be a case of thinking about race stratergy.

The race strategy at Spa is one-stop for an optimal race, but the reality is usually two-stops. And, already as I write, (in the third lap now), Vettel has just been advised by the pit team to look after tires!

There will be some heavy wear on those soft tires at this stage in my opinion. However, even if you choose a different tire as the Marussia's have, they might not gain any positions if the rest of the racers have a different strategy .

Marussia-Cosworth, (Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton), started at 22nd and 23rd and were promptly overtaken by about the third lap and are now 21 and 22 last in the race at lap 9 everyone is still on the track.

All the Marussia's could hope for is to be able to stay out, (perhaps on a one stop strategy, lets see), when all the other cars have to come in for tire-changes at about lap 10 - and yes here they come. The only problem with that is that the other drivers will be on fresh tires as the Marussia's will be half cooked.

Anyway, I am not going to rattle on throughout the race, history will show us what happened. Enjoy.

Gary Anderson explains how tyres, DRS and KERS works

Summer F1 break, withdrawal symptoms?
Its a really long break, too long for this F1 fan. If you are suffering from withdrawal symptoms, I suggest you read through a few old posts here at Formula1Race.co.uk.

Looking out of our private box over an empty pit-lane!

Gary Anderson explains how tyres, DRS and KERS works!

BLUE WALL - Think WATER! 'Tires (or tyres) for Swimming. = Water Blue - Full WETS!'
GREEN WALL - Think - 'Moss-Covered-Wall - Slippery When Wet'.

Now for Breakfast.
Orange Juice - A hard tire (and a hard mans drink! You try ordering an orange-juice in my local with all your mates drinking shots).

Bread,
Butter,
Jam - Got it?

F1 2013 Race, German Grand Prix.

Vettel, Raikkoenen, Grosjean.

Nurburgring, 5-7 July.

Not to take anything away from Riakkonen and Grosjean, I think the biggest part of their success in this race has to be down to the team as a whole and the car being really dialed-in for this circuit. As it was back in Bahrain in April, where they got a 2-3 podium in the same order.  So, it signals to me that, unless it is a coincidence, that it is down to the cars and the team being in tune with the circuit design.

This is a factor a team could use to measure their potential performance as a preview to even attending a race. The teams will have all the telemetry and technical data about every track and I bet this will show similarities at least between Bahrain and Germany's Nurburgring.

So, men of the race (and team), for this F1 fan, really has to go to Raikkoenen 1st, Grosjean 2nd and Lotus-Renault overall. I love to see a team emerge like this. I bet they do it again at the next Bahrain-esk / Germany-like ring, (although I am not sure what that circuit is). It is to do with the technical telemetry from the car, when it is on a flat-out timed lap. Not necessarily to do with the shape of the track, length or cambers, but, they will all be factors!

F1 2013 Race, British Grand Prix.

Rosberg, Webber, Alonso!

Silverstone, 28-30 June.
Live on BBC TV and BBC Radio 5 live plus live text commentary online.

Man of the race for this F1 fan has to be Mark Webber, for after a poor start, he brought himself all the way back to 2nd on the podium and made some great overtaking maneuvers in the process.

There was a lot of pointless hoo-har about tires and their fallibility, after several teams suffered punctures, but it was down to nothing more than splintered carbon fibers on the track from the many minor collisions and wheel to wheel racing we saw in this race.

No tires can take the kinds of punctures made by carbon splinters at the kinds of speeds we have round Silverstone and survive.  The only way to avoid punctures is not to drive over the carbon fibers in the first place.

A good race all round.

F1 2013 Race, Canadian Grand Prix.

F1 2013 Race, Canadian Grand Prix.

Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton!

Montreal, 7-9 June.
Live on BBC TV and BBC Radio 5 live plus live text commentary online.

Based on information from the BBC Sports F1 Website.

For this F1 fan, the single man of the race has to be Fernando Alonso, for holding in there against huge pressure, mostly my vote goes to him for tactical driving, (staying ahead). But, this race has two other drivers that stand out for me, Felipe Massa, (I am a big fan of Massa). and Paul De Resta (surprisingly! Because I am not usually a fan of De Resta's driving style).

And, I naturally avoid taking notice of De Resta, for the similar reasons I mentioned further down this post. Like Grosjean, De Resta was another driver that some stupid F1 commentators were taunting us Schumacher fans with, saying last year that he could possibly replace Schuey, (even before the end of the season, ha ha ha ha, I never laughed so much in my life). No way!

No-one is talking about De Resta (apart for Coulthard commentating for the BBC, who noticed on lap 58 that De Resta was doing great, I was shouting at the TV monitor, (as you do) long before that);

Both De Resta and Felipe Massa had fantastic drives, coming from way back on the grid at 17th and 16th respectively, to finish at 7th and 8th respectively. Wow! Especially for De Resta, I didn't think he had that in him! I will be keeping my eye on him, maybe he is improving and learning after all. Some drivers just get stuck in a rut, either its the car, the team or themselves.

They usually cannot do anything about the first two!

Nico Rosberg follows in the footsteps of his father thirty years before him, by winning at Monaco.  Rosberg said, he wasn't thinking about his father or his fathers win, as he crossed the line, but that he was just happy for the team and looking forward to celebrating his win at a beach party in Monaco with the team, friends and family.

Rosberg, grew up in Monaco and could even see the pit lane area from his classroom window and always dreamed of winning here! It was an excellent text-book Monaco race-drive from Rosberg.

Lewis Top Man.

Man of the race for this F1 fan:- Lewis Hamilton for a great drive under a lot of pressure. I thought that, especially after coming together in several tassels with other drivers, he still kept his head.

An embarrassing race for Lewis Hamilton, as he pulls into his old pit crews pit during the race!

I cannot help but think about what must be going through Schumachers mind now, as both the Mercedes cars finish 3rd and 4th. I think it is obviously down to improved cars.

Each package (team), seems to have their cars balanced, as you can see with most of the teams cars finishing side-by-side. I wish Schuey could have raced this season, I'm sure with the improved Merc, he would have at least won a few races. He was always competitive!
